Responsible Parenthood & Marriage

Monday 30th @ 7:30-9pm at Catholic Pastoral Centre

In an era where half of marriages breakdown, why are marriages where NFP is used 10 times more successful??

Catholics are quite often perceived as naive of “responsible parenting”, a very important yet often confusing aspect of marriage. We hear: “…The Church teaches against contraception, am I supposed to have 15 babies then?” What is Natural Family Planning (NFP)? Isn’t NFP just a natural form of contraception? How reliable is it, really? Most Catholics are often at a loss to answer!

Due to the widespread demand for it, the slideshow used in last month's Open Session entitled "The One" has been made available. It includes notes containing important remarks and information not on the slides themselves. It should be a helpful reference on the most of the content, but much of what was said was unscripted.

True Love Waits Article in The Record!

Witnessing to the truth…

By Stephen Gorddard

True Love Waits Catholic WA (TLW) is getting fired up for another year of witnessing to the truth and meaning of our sexuality, but this is no small task.

According to a survey conducted by La Trobe University in Australia in 1997, we all have reason to be concerned. The survey found that by the age of 19 years old, 66% of both men and women have initiated sex. A 2002 study by the University reports that three quarters of men and women believe that sex before marriage is acceptable.

In my experience, once all is said and done, young people really desire to be happy. They want to love others and be loved in turn. But they often don't realise that this is exactly what Christ and the Church desire for them all along.

WFA Perth Women's Forum

"Real choices for women"

Recent public debate has highlighted the problem of abortion in Australia and its impact on women. With 90,000 abortions in Australia each year, many believe it’s time to challenge the status quo. It’s time for women to stand together and declare that we deserve better than abortion.

Following popular forums in other states attracting close to 2000 women so far, Women’s Forum Australia is now bringing this major event to Perth.

True Love Waits Catholic WA Team Members at JPII Institute in 2005

Many of you will know that Natalie Thomas, Jing Ping Wong and Grant Gorddard have left Perth for Melbourne to study at the John Paul II Institute for Marriage and Family in 2005. Grant and Natalie will be continuing their graduate diplomas in marriage and family studies and Jing Ping will be continuing his masters in theology (Marriage and Family).

Lydia Fernandez, who also studied there throughout 2004, is also returning to the institute and will be graduating in April this year with her Graduate Diploma of Marriage and Family Studies. Nga Nguyen and Clare Pike will be at the institute during March 2005 completing a course by Prof. Mary Shivanandan, a visiting professor from the JPII Institute in Washington DC.

Pope John Paul II has a tender concern for marriages and families that extends back to his early days as a priest. He has contributed an enormous wealth of theology and pastoral care initiatives to the Catholic Church in this area. The John Paul II Institute for Marriage and Family Studies is one of his initiatives.

The institute aims to provide a complete theological education in marriage and family studies and/or bioethics. Courses are offered in philosophy, theological method, biblical studies, systematic theology, moral theology, applied ethics, family law and politics, canon law, psychology, sociology and pastoral care. Accreditations offered include graduate diploma programmes, masters degrees and doctoral degrees.

Since its foundation in 1982, there have been establishments of the Institute in the Lateran University (Vatican City State), in Washington DC (USA), in Valencia (Spain), in Mexico City and Guadalajara (Mexico), in Cotonou (Benin), in Salvador da Bahia (Brazil), and in Changanacherry (India).

For more information about the John Paul II Institute for Marriage and Family Studies, visit the Melbourne website at: www.jp2institute.org/info.html.

US Teens Want to Wait for Marriage

A recent survey conducted by NBC television network uncovered some interesting results on the sexual experience of adolescents in the US.

NBC asked detailed questions to teenagers aged between 13-16 and discovered that half of those surveyed clearly stated that they really “wanted to remain virgins”. And, when teens who had engaged in intimate sexual contact were asked why they did this, 76% answered it was only “because the other person wanted to”.

This is encouraging news at it reveals that most teenagers, in the US at least, don't wish to engage in sexual activity and have the desire to wait until marriage. It also shows that in our Western world, a world in great need of real love, young people are realising that sexual activity outside of marriage is not the answer.

The True Love Waits Catholic WA Site is Live!

As you can see, the True Love Waits Catholic WA site is live! It has been a long time coming, but finally we have an online place we hope you'll enjoy spending time at.

The site has been created to help young people learn and live the message of chastity and save the gift of sex for marriage. Chastity is an attitude of heart and a way of living that respects sexuality, leading people to experience real love in their lives. We hope our new website can play a part in communicating this message to the young people of Perth and the world.

The site features four main areas to visit. 'Know It' is where you can go to learn more about why it's worth saving the gift of sex for marriage. 'Live It' provides you with support information including the latest chastity news and upcoming local TLW events. 'Resources' has reviews on books, audio and visual material that can help you learn more. Finally, 'Us' provides info on who we are, what we're here for, bios on core team members and where (and who) our inspiration comes from.

So chill out for awhile, take your time and check out the site. And let us know what you think too! You can e-mail us with any questions, thoughts or suggestions at truelovewaitswa@yahoo.com.
